OVERVIEW

While the design of this dial is essentially a carryover from the previous glossy gilt dial Rolex produced up until 1967, it’s the first year Rolex began making them with a matte paint texture. Just like the gilt dials, these early matte dials feature a “Meters First” 200m = 660ft layout, but was only produced that way for a couple more years until Rolex decided that the growing US market and their dumb Imperial system of measurements were a higher priority than the preferences of the rest of the world. I don’t personally have a preference for which depth rating goes first since I’m not taking this watch anywhere near 200m/660ft deep in the ocean, but I do think that this dial’s scarcity makes it pretty cool.

CONDITION NOTES

CASE: Sharp & thick with prominent chamfers, light natural wear and no corrosion. Bracelet is tight and in solid overall condition. Correct MK2 bezel has faded to a perfect dolphin grey.

DIAL & HANDS: Overall clean dial with original creamy lume. Original hands are in great untouched condition.

MOVEMENT: Clean with no corrosion and running accurately and optimally.
