1971 Rolex Daytona 6262 Tropical Panda Dial Chronograph

Something rare became a little rarer.

OVERVIEW

As is usually the case with watches that are now deemed as rare, the Rolex Daytona 6262 was not a popular model. Considered a “transitional” model, the 6262 was produced for only about one year from 1970 to mid 1971 and looks just like its predecessor, the Rolex Daytona 6239, with its only improvement being a more precise movement (Caliber 727 at 21,600vph vs Caliber 722 at 18,000vph). Consumers at the time didn’t care much about this improvement, and for fair reason too: Rolex had already released a Daytona 6240 featuring waterproof screw-down pushers making a chronograph with pump pushers relatively obsolete. A more precise movement is cool and all, but does anyone really notice when a watch loses an extra second a day?

Of course now when it comes to collecting vintage Rolex, practicality basically flies out the window while beauty and scarcity become the shining beacon of value. Only 9,000 stainless steel 6262 Daytona are estimated to have been produced (and only a dozen or so gold ones) making it one of the rarest Daytona models out there. Add a dash of brown tropical subdials to the mix and you now have a recipe for a very unique and absolutely alluring timepiece, especially being in the fantastic condition that it’s in.
