OVERVIEW
The Rolex Daytona is the greatest chronograph line ever made. While this might not be a totally controversial statement, there are plenty of people who would point to the Omega Speedmaster or the Heuer Carrera to take that spot. What I would say to them is that throughout time the Speedmaster has been completely bastardized with hundreds of weird variants and getting one for less than retail is easier than getting an In N’ Out burger at lunchtime. The 60’s Heuer Carrera was a masterpiece but don’t even get me started on how its evolved since. The Daytona however, is still one of the most coveted and hardest to get watches out there with grey market prices at 2.5x retail. Even despite how the Rolex brand itself has evolved into a more cookie cutter watch brand, the current Daytona is one of the better references of all Daytonas.
None are as coveted though as a manual wind Daytona with smaller case, plexiglass and screwdown pushers. While all Rolex Daytonas are outstanding and have unique qualities that speak to each individual, it’s the 6265 that is the design basis for pretty much all the Daytona models that come after and one of the last to feature all of the details mentioned above. This earlier one doesn’t have the red DAYTONA logo above the hour counter yet but even that detail, or lack thereof, is a detail that might speak to you as well.
