OVERVIEW

As far as possessions go, there is nothing more gratifying than owning something that has gotten better and will only get better with age. Not simply age alone, but from constant and unabashed use of it. Like an old leather jacket or perfectly faded and whiskered selvedge jeans, knowing that the way they look and feel is a result of a lifetime of utility and love. It becomes more satisfying everyday to use these items, while our encounters with possessions that were never made to last just seem like a waste.

Of course, you could buy a new leather jacket or jeans and wear the hell out of them while enjoying the work and process that gives them the perfect patina. That’s a great feeling. You could also buy a new watch, but unlike the leather jacket or jeans a new watch just won’t age the same as this Red Sub has. Probably barely at all. In 50 years the hundreds of thousands of Rolex Submariners bought in the last decade will for better or worse look mostly the same. Which is why I don’t own any of those.

CONDITION NOTES

CASE: Thick case with long lugs and no evidence of saltwater corrosion. Lightly polished in the past with original chamfers present.

DIAL & HANDS: Charming dial with some fading throughout and showing some age on the 9:00 edge. Original lume has the most satisfying pumpkin patina as well as the matching hands. It’s an overall great dial with a condition that matches the rest of the watch and a vibe that only comes with a lifetime of wear.

MOVEMENT: Clean with no corrosion. Will be serviced prior to delivery.
