OVERVIEW

Over the last 50+ years the AP Royal Oak has become one of the most iconic and recognizable watch designs ever. When the very first 5402 was introduced in the 1970s though, I can’t even imagine how blown away some people were by its presence. There was nothing else like it at the time (or as expensive) and it spawned several imitations throughout the next couple decades. Of course some people probably hated the watch too, but that’s what good design does… it evokes a feeling. People hating it is probably better than people feeling nothing at all. Obviously, I’m part of the large group of people who absolutely love it. As it is with many vintage watches, the first one is usually the best one.

CONDITION NOTES

CASE: Ultra sharp and clean. I have a hard time believing it has never been professionally polished simply because it’s rare to see one of these so mint. If it was then whoever did the work deserves some kind of award.

DIAL & HANDS: Mint and perfect with beautiful and warm original lume. Many of these dials aren’t in perfect condition, with a lot of the galvanic paint flaking off. This dial has none of that.

MOVEMENT: Running well with optimal accuracy and amplitude.
