1940s Juvenia Spillman Chronograph

Collectors call this dial “Tropical Rainstorm”. Or maybe only I call it that.

ABOUT THIS WATCH

What started its life as a very beautiful albeit more standard dark grey gilt dialed chronograph, this Juvenia has blossomed into a fabulous & fierce showstopper. There is no question that this watch spent most of its existence in a warm, sunny and humid climate evidenced by its faded brown patinated dial. Collectors call this a “Tropical” dial and lately, valuable watches with these dials can easily command 150-200% the asking price of the same mint condition original looking model. While I am tempted to list the price of this watch in the same fashion as it is certainly one of a kind, I must admit that this watch is not for everyone. That might be slightly pessimistic of me, but I will at least be happy to know that someone who absolutely loves this watch will have obtained it for almost half the price of what it would be if the watch looked brand new. Yes, sometimes people can be that lucky.

That’s just the dial. What makes this Juvenia chronograph awesome & unique from the very beginning is the Spillman case with inverse pushers. Spillman was one of most notable casemakers in the early 1900s producing watch cases for several iconic models, most famously the Rolex Oyster waterproof case which he helped secure the patent for. At 35mm, which was actually considered a larger sized watch in the 1940s, it wears extremely well on the wrist because the thickness of the case lends its own heftiness to it. Paired with the venerable & extremely reliable Venus 175 movement, this 70+ year old watch can easily be enjoyed for the rest of your young life.

This Juvenia is in fantastic aesthetic and working condition. The case has definitely been polished in the past (what 70 year old watch hasn’t?), but it still maintains the same brush finishing, sharp edges and thick lugs that it would have originally. Just recently serviced, it is ready to find its home on the arm of an indisputably tasteful watch lover.
