1950s Mido Multi-Centerchrono

Not your standard chronograph.

ABOUT THIS WATCH

First produced in 1945, the Mido Multi-Centerchrono is one of the most unique and elegant chronographs of the last century due to it’s simplistic operation and design. Whereas a traditional chronograph would have multiple subdials to record different functions, the Multi-Centerchrono completely lacks those registers and simply operates as a basic stopwatch with a 4th center hand recording the minutes. This was achieved by using a modified Valjoux NZ and turning it into what Mido branded as a Cal. 1300. While still being as useful as your standard chronograph, this feature eliminates the aesthetic clunkiness many watchmakers fail to refine when designing one.

Speaking of aesthetics, the most wonderful thing about this watch besides it’s unique function is the case itself, which seasoned enthusiasts will know was produced by famed casemaker Francois Borgel, who also used the same cases and pushers for the Patek 1463 and Movado m95. Another bonus is Mido was able to make the watch anti-magnetic by adding a ring around the movement and a dustcap.

The model came in several variations, but this one with its contrasting black and white gilt dial absolutely takes the cake. I’m apparently not the only one who thinks this since black galvanic gilt dial watches have exploded in value due to their unparalleled beauty and extremely difficult and expensive process to produce in modern times. So to find any vintage gilt dial in great condition is quite the hunt.

And great condition it is. Despite losing some of its original glossy luster due to the common occurrence of radium dust deterioration, the dial, hands, lume and case are completely unmolested besides normal wear. It is in tip-top shape and with its recent full service is running just as good as it looks.
