ABOUT THIS WATCH
At a time when the typical dress watch was an average of about 33mm, Omega was known for making a few that were considerably very large. While many of their watches were pushing around 35mm, the 2505 was the largest and eventually given the name “Jumbo” by collectors. In the midst of current trends of people wearing massive timepieces on their wrists, 38mm seems pretty tame by comparison, however I can imagine someone wearing the 2505 Jumbo on their wrist in the 1940’s and having other people look at them as if they were wearing a Richard Mille nowadays. “Oh look at that watch, I bet that guy drives a Duesy.”
Wearing this watch today might still get you a little attention, not for it’s flashiness, but for its unique tastefulness. This is obviously not a modern watch masquerading as a vintage watch like so many newly produced watches are now. This is an old watch in a modern size that was kept in a drawer somewhere until it’s original owner finally realized it was actually worth something. There are a few indescribable features vintage watches have that are very difficult to replicate, but the first words that come to my mind are “charm” and “soul”. This watch has those things in spades.
Evidenced by how easily you can still find one of these watches for sale, Omega probably sold a lot of them. What is much more difficult however is finding one in this kind of original condition. This watch is utterly immaculate, unmolested, only slightly worn, and is probably the nicest example of the 2505 I’ve ever seen. There’s still even waxy residue on the caseback from how they arrived brand new. As far as timekeeping, it is running as good as it looks.
I dare you to find another one nicer.
